About 10 years ago, a group of Hamiltonians created a collective to expose more music lovers to artists they may not have otherwise heard of.

The genre is avant-garde and experimental, and the average person may be jarred upon first listen.

“It’s not always pleasing to the ear for people because a lot of us are used to certain sounds, whether it be certain melodies or scales or rhythms,” said Dallas Walzak, one of Strangewaves collective’s founders.

Avant-garde and experimental music is rebellious in nature and strays from traditional musical norms, using unconventional sounds and structures.

This could include the use of industrial, screeching or ambient noises and a random song structure. Or it could mean improvising on stage.
