MADISON (WKOW) -- Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide, but research is changing the outlook for patients.
With Wednesday being World Cancer Research Day, Aspirus Health is highlighting clinical trials and personalized medicine.
Personalized treatment is already changing approaches to breast, prostate, and lung cancer.
Dr. Andrew Huang, an oncologist, says personalized treatment is more targeted.
"Until the modern era, with genomic sequencing, we were treating most patients the same way. But now we can change the type of therapy, the amount of therapy, to match what a patient's cancer is behaving like," Huang said.
In the short-term, patients often see benefits like fewer side effects or reduced chances of recurrence.
Long-term, the focus is on improving qualit
