Oklahoma will be without starting quarterback John Mateer for an undetermined time, after the junior injured his hand in last weekend’s win over Auburn. Head coach Brent Venables said on Wednesday’s SEC teleconference that Mateer had not had surgery as of this morning.
John Mateer to undergo surgery on throwing hand, expected to return this season
“Hasn’t had the procedure yet,” Venables said. “Has it today, we’ll see how everything goes and assess things from there. But, we’re getting Mike Hawkins ready for next week, that’s where our thoughts are.”
That means sophomore Michael Hawkins Jr. will run the Sooners’ offense for the time being. Hawkins, who made seven appearances as a true freshman in 2024, including four starts, has played only briefly this season.
