As he wraps up his second year in St. Louis on Wednesday, Sonny Gray's season will go down as a rare below-average campaign.
Gray starts Wednesday's finale at 8:45 p.m. (St. Louis time) as the Cardinals go for their first sweep in San Francisco since 1993. On Tuesday, Brendan Donovan's club record four doubles helped the Cardinals to rally from a five-run deficit late to win.
The right-hander Gray (14-8, 4.33 ERA) has one more season left in the three-season deal worth $75 million that he signed entering the 2024 season. His ERA is about half a run worse than a year ago and he's below league average by ERA+ for the first time since 2018.
He has only been below average in two of his 12 previous years.
This season, Gray is permitting 1.5 more hits per 9 innings than he did a year ago.
