Former Asm. Ian Calderon, 39, announced his candidacy to succeed Gov. Gavin Newsom next year.
Driving the news: Calderon, a Democrat from the Los Angeles area, served in the Assembly from 2012-2020. • He was the Majority Leader of the Assembly from 2016-2020. • Calderon was the first millennial to be elected to the Assembly, coming from a political dynasty that includes his father Charles Calderon and stepmother Lisa Calderon, who holds the seat he left in 2020 to spend more time with his family. • After leaving the Assembly, Calderon founded lobbying firm Majority Advisors.
