OPELOUSAS, la. (KLFY) -- Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser and Louisiana Main Street are awarding funding to 12 Louisiana main street communities, including Opelousas, to support downtown growth initiatives.

Gretchen Erlingson with Opelousas Main Street said the funding will enable Opelousas Main Street to undertake crucial projects such as sidewalk improvements on Market Street and the installation of wheelchair-accessible ramps in city parks.

"This is giving us an opportunity to reach out to the people of Opelousas so that we can do future planning," Erlingson said.

The funding from Louisiana Main Street is complemented by the Thriving Communities Program from the Department of Transportation, which together provide a substantial boost for local infrastructure projects.
