ST. PAUL, Minn. (GRAY) – After last month’s shooting at Annunciation Church, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announced plans to call a special session on guns. The governor reportedly began calling legislators just days after the shooting.

Within the next few weeks, he was meeting with legislative leaders to talk about details of a possible special session.

Now, almost a month after the shooting that left two kids dead and nearly two dozen injured, the prospects of a special session might be facing a stark reality.

DFL lawmakers, Walz included, want to pass a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. While those specific policy positions aren’t popular with the GOP, Walz hoped to at least get a vote on them in a special session.
