A 4.1 magnitude earthquake has struck near Strathgordon in southwest Tasmania.

The earthquake occurred on Thursday at 6.38am, with a depth of 14 kilometres, according to GeoScience Australia .

GeoScience Australia listed the epicentre at Maydena, a small village in Tasmania.

By 8am, about 96 people had registered felt reports with the organisation.

Speaking to 7NEWS.com.au on Thursday, a Hobart resident revealed he had felt the quake more than 150km away from the epicentre.

“The house cracked (it sounded like wood breaking),” he said.

“I felt it. But it wasn’t massively intense.”
