LAPORTE, Ind. -- A massive compost fire near the LaPorte County Fairgrounds was still smoldering as of Wednesday evening, with fire crews working around the clock since Sunday afternoon.

The flames have taken plenty of time and resources to extinguish, including nearly 10 million gallons of water that have been used in the effort so far.

Wednesday, due to wind and smoke, firefighters switched directions breaking up the compost pile to help keep the fire, that is believed to have started from spontaneous combustion, under control.

An air quality alert from LaPorte County Emergency Management remains in effect, as heavy smog, believed to be non-toxic, continues to fill the air.
