The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Wednesday approved the extension of General Anil Chauhan as Chief of Defence Staff’s (CDS) tenure up to May 30, 2026 or until further orders, the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.

General Chauhan was appointed as CDS on September 28, 2022. General Chauhan would also function as Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Military Affairs (DMA), under the Defence Ministry. The DMA was created when the government had first created the position of CDS and appointed General Bipin Rawat to the post in December 2019.

According to an official gazette dated December 28, 2019, the upper age limit for the CDS has been fixed at 65 years. General Chauhan will turn 65 in May next year.
