A UNE academic says he's worried about an 'over-reliance' on AI and the long-term repercussions once the tech becomes more mainstream.

Science lecturer and Academic Integrity Investigating Officer Dr Tommy Leung, who recently delivered a critique of AI generative models at the Skeptics in the Pub event, said there was a risk that students would become too reliant on the AI 'assistant' and exert less energy thinking for themselves.

"The main problem that I see is, you want the students to be thinking and generating their own ideas, but if you outsource that to an algorithm, then maybe we should be asking the question, which is, are they doing the task that they're supposed to be doing?" he said.
