OTTAWA — While most Canadians struggle through an unprecedented housing and cost of living crisis, Canada’s taxpayer’s watchdog is calling for an end of Rideau Hall’s $130,000 clothing allowance.
Figures contained within a response to an order paper question — filed by Conservative MP John Brassard — show Gov. Gen. Mary Simon billed taxpayers $7,576 for new clothes between Jan. 25, 2023 and March 4, 2025.
“Simon takes a $378,000 salary from taxpayers, she can pay for her own clothes,” said the Canadian Taxpayer Federation’s Franco Terrazzano.
“Many Canadians are actually stressed about the price of clothing and they shouldn’t have to pay for the governor general’s wardrobe.”
