GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) - The Mississippi Department of Corrections made an error that let a habitual offender out of prison years too early. Within three months, the freed inmate racked up five felonies across two counties, including armed carjacking and kidnapping.

WLOX News uncovered documents that revealed the mistake and pressed the state agency for answers.

MDOC records show that Reginald Donovan Johnson completed a three-year prison sentence and was released on June 2, 2025. By the end of the month, Johnson was arrested in Hancock County and charged with stealing a car and fleeing deputies.

Hancock County court records show Johnson posted bond and then never showed up for court. A warrant was then issued for his arrest.
