Portland city councilors won wide support for a proposal to codify the city’s sanctuary status in light of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown but said they aren’t ready yet to move forward with a separate proposal to ban law enforcement officers from wearing masks.

Dozens of people spoke in favor of a move by Councilors Sameer Kanal and Steve Novick to include the city’s sanctuary status in city code.
