VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A Virginia Beach mail carrier pled guilty on Tuesday to dumping people’s mail into a dumpster, federal prosecutors said.

According to court documents, 34-year-old Jerold Brent Mayers pled guilty to delay or destruction of mail. On May 2, a witness saw Mayers remove mail from his postal truck and throw it away at an apartment complex in Virginia Beach. The witness reported the incident to the post office.

Investigators later recovered the discarded mail, which included checks, billing and bank statements, DMV correspondence, and medical mailings, among other mail. The items were returned to the post office and put back into the mail stream.

Mayers is scheduled to be sentenced on March 6, 2026. He faces up to five years in prison.
