AVON LAKE, Ohio — City Council members are demanding accountability after a chemical spill from Lubrizol’s Avon Lake facility released 6,600 gallons of diluted polyurethane into Powdermaker Creek.

At its Sept. 22 meeting, Avon Lake City Council reviewed the Sept. 16 incident, which occurred around 9 a.m. when a valve was opened due to human error, according to Councilman Rob Shahmir.

The substance, Sancure 825 — a water-borne polyurethane manufactured by Lubrizol — was first reported to the city around 12:30 p.m. by a resident who noticed the spill. Images on social media show a cloudy liquid coming out of a stormwater drain.
