Mayor Karen Bass on Wednesday signed off on a $2.62 billion expansion and modernization of the Los Angeles Convention Center, finalizing a plan supporters said will revitalize downtown and prepare the facility for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Bass held a press conference at the Convention Center, where she was joined by downtown residents, business and civic leaders, and elected officials, to mark the moment. It came days after the Los Angeles City Council approved the plan on an 11-2 vote on Sept. 19, moving forward despite warnings of ballooning costs and risks to the city’s budget.
