EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) -- A total of 19 First Presbyterian School students from 5th to 8th grade, alongside their teachers and parent volunteers, picked up trash along Scenic Drive as part of a community service project.

A total of 188 pounds of litter was collected, according to a news release announcing the cleanup.

The cleanup was part of a school-wide community service initiative and was "unique" in being student-led and coordinated.

Teachers Brent Schlinke and Emily Dabeck facilitated the effort, but it was the students themselves who organized and carried out the project — showing how young people can step up as leaders in their community, according to the news release.

“This project shows how much kids can accomplish when given the opportunity to lead,” said one of the parents.
