CHICAGO -- Does anyone want the final National League Wild Card spot?

Wednesday could have been a disaster for the Mets, who committed another cavalcade of mistakes in a 10-3 loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field. But the Reds also lost to the Pirates, keeping the Mets in no worse than a tie for the final NL berth . Their ability to retain control of their own destiny will depend upon whether the Diamondbacks beat the Dodgers. The Reds are one game back of New York.

Just as they did in Tuesday’s victory over Chicago , the Mets descended into an early hole, this time when Jonah Tong allowed the first six batters of the third inning to reach base safely. But unlike on Tuesday, the Mets never patched together any semblance of a comeback.
