A local councillor has said the communication of a shopping centre introducing car parking charges has been “very poor”. On Saturday (September 20), the Serpentine Green shopping centre in Hampton, Peterborough , started to operate Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras .

Customers can park for up to four hours free, and if they wish to extend their stay they can pay £2.50 for up to seven hours. This is the first time the centre has introduced charges since it opened in 1999.

Councillor John Howard (Con, Hargate and Hempsted) said he, other ward councillors and Hampton Parish Council had “no advance notice or communication” on the parking charges being introduced.
