PHOENIX — The suspect in the murder of a man sleeping by a canal in Phoenix admitted to shooting the man eight times, unprovoked, court documents state.
Around 11:45 a.m. on Sept. 22, officers responded to the scene near a canal off of 36th Street and McDowell Road.
According to authorities, officers found the man was dead and in the beginning stages of decomposition. Police said obvious signs of trauma were also found on the body. Police identified the man as 48-year-old Efrin Victor Evangelista.
A witness called police on Sept. 19, around 5:45 p.m., to report a suspicious person. The witness said that about 5 or 10 minutes before he called the police, he was hanging out in the alleyway by his house, and he heard five to six gunshots being fired.
