HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - For the last three years, Hawaii has had just one air ambulance company that serves the entire island chain.

Now a new carrier is helping meet growing demand, with another on the way.

Optimum AIR is Hawaii’s newest inter-island air medical transport service and began operations on Sept. 1 .

I joined the crew to see what a typical day is like -- shuttling between islands, dropping off medical equipment, meeting with hospital staff, and transporting patients from rural areas to hospitals with advanced care.
