Alabama plans to carry out its fourth execution of 2025 Thursday evening, putting Geoffrey Todd West to death by nitrogen gas hypoxia for killing a woman during a robbery 28 years ago.

This execution method has been controversial since its first use by the state in January 2024. Since then, Alabama has executed five prisoners via nitrogen gas hypoxia.

West, who is currently 49, was convicted of capital murder for the 1997 shooting of Margaret Parrish Berry in Etowah County.

The execution is planned for a 30-hour window between midnight Sept. 25 and 6 a.m. Sept. 26. West's execution is set to occur at the same time as an unrelated execution in Texas.
