MADISON, Wis. (WKOW) — Public Health Madison & Dane County issued a public health alert on September 24 due to a spike in drug overdoses. In the past 24 hours, EMS responded to five confirmed overdose calls.
This surge in overdoses is unusual for the community. The cause of the increase is currently unknown.
Officials speculate that changes in the composition of street drugs, potentially involving opiates, fentanyl, or other synthetic drugs, may be contributing factors.
Residents are encouraged to obtain safer use supplies, such as fentanyl test strips and Narcan, from the Syringe Services Program at Public Health Madison & Dane County. Locations include 2705 East Washington Avenue and 2300 South Park Street in Madison.
