I breathed in as I stepped up to take my first drive ever at Scituate’s famed Widow’s Walk Golf Course, trying to set aside my fear.

Fear? What a crazy golf concept. But the legend of Widow’s Walk runs deep. It’s super hard, they say. The wind will mess with your game and your mind, they claim. Bring a ton of balls, they warn with a wink; go into the deep fescue off the narrow fairways and you can’t find your ball even if it’s the the size of watermelon.

As a developing golfer, I wasn’t sure I was ready for it. But being a Scituate raised gal (who, like most kids in the 1970s was very familiar with the pre-course topography back then; it was the top high school party spot when it was the abandoned Boston Sand and Gravel), I was drawn to the idea of playing there.
