But for Carrie Edwards, it has meant something altogether different. The grandmother, from Virginia, US, matched four of the first five Powerball numbers along with a key sixth numeral.
Her win would normally have yielded a prize of $50,000 (£37,000). But when she bought her ticked in a Virginia store she paid an extra dollar – tripling her eventual prize.
