Winning the lottery can completely change the winners' life – paving the way for lavish holidays, new homes and sustaining their families for years to come.

But for Carrie Edwards, it has meant something altogether different. The grandmother, from Virginia, US, matched four of the first five Powerball numbers along with a key sixth numeral.

Her win would normally have yielded a prize of $50,000 (£37,000). But when she bought her ticked in a Virginia store she paid an extra dollar – tripling her eventual prize.
