Australia’s favourite island getaway, Bali, has been shaken by a magnitude 5.7 earthquake .

It struck at a depth of 12km off the coast of nearby East Java about 7pm AEST time, sending people scrambling from their homes.

As yet there have been no reports of serious damage.

The advice from Indonesia’s meteorology and geophysics agency BMKG is to be alert for possible aftershocks.

One tourist said he was woken by the earthquake, and had to confirm with staff that he was not dreaming.

“Bro, it just happened in Java and we felt the tremors here (in Bali),” he said.

“It woke me up out of my sleep.”
