Americans may be in need of a refresher on the First Amendment for it appears that it is no longer held in the esteem that our Founding Fathers held it.
The First Amendment prohibits the government from intruding on a citizen’s right to express their opinions about the government, whether by speech, in writing or by protesting. The Constitution gives each of us the right to assemble peacefully, criticize the government and demand change.
A newspaper, a private business, can decide to not print your letter, but the government is not allowed to tell the newspaper not to print it or threaten to withhold approval of a merger the paper is seeking if they run the letter.
