A Colorado coroner confirmed Tuesday that two hunters found dead on a trail were killed by a lightning strike.

“I’ve not seen this type of activity with humans,” Richard Martin, the Conejos County Coroner, told KKCO .

The bodies of Andrew Porter, 25, of Asheville, North Carolina, and Ian Staski, also 25, of Salt Lake City, were found on Sept. 18. KKCO reports the two had been reported missing five days earlier, a week after their families lost contact with them. Porter and Staski were on an elk hunting trip in the Rio Grande National Forest.

Martin told KKCO that "hair was singed" on the victims' bodies, adding that random burn marks were found on their bodies and clothing — an indication that electricity stopped their hearts and brains.
