On Wednesday, a gunman opened fire at an ICE detention facility in Dallas , killing one detainee and critically wounding two others. No ICE officers were injured.

Although the investigation is still in its early stages, federal officials quickly described the shooting as "an act of targeted violence" and "an attack" against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. FBI Director Kash Patel later posted a photo on social media showing an unspent shell casing engraved with the words "ANTI-ICE."

This latest shooting, of course, raises troubling questions about safety for both immigration and customs enforcement officers, and for immigrants themselves. Whether intended or not, people being detained by ICE were the direct victims of this attack.
