UNADILLA, Ga. — The Unadilla community is mourning the loss of a 103-year-old World War II veteran .
Charles Speight, who served as a Navy fighter pilot in WWII, died on Monday, Sept. 22, at 103, according to his obituary .
Speight, according to his obituary with the Brannen-Nesmith Funeral Home , lived his whole life in Unadilla before he left the town to start his college career at the University of Georgia.
A few years after enrolling at UGA, he joined the Navy as a fighter pilot. He served on two ships, the Lexington and the Yorktown.
"I was on the Lexington first and it got hit by a Japanese bomb, then we got transferred to the Yorktown after the Iwo Jima invasion," Speight said in an interview back in 2018 .
