CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) -- A landspout was spotted in Pinellas County on Thursday afternoon.

Emergency officials received reports of a possible tornado over the county landfill at around 12:36 p.m.

A storm report from the National Weather Service confirmed the funnel cloud was a landspout, based on photos provided by emergency officials and members of the media.

The NWS defines a landspout as "a tornado that does not arise from organized storm-scale rotation and therefore is not associated with a wall cloud (visually) or a mesocyclone (on radar)." They are considered the land-based equivalents of waterspouts.

"This landspout was observed underneath a developing updraft devoid of any precipitation," the storm report said.

No injuries or damage were reported.
