TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE – State Police Sgt. Nigel Barnett, Jr. of Poughkeepsie, who was killed on September 16 while riding a motorcycle to work, was laid to rest on Thursday, September 25.

He was 49 years old.

Governor Kathy Hochul attended the funeral service along with State Police Superintendent Major Steven James at the Faith Assembly in Poughkeepsie.

Barnett was a 19-year veteran of the State Police.

He began his law enforcement career as a correction officer at the Dutchess County Jail in 2002. Four years later, he joined the State Police and was promoted to sergeant in 2020.
