The Government is set to introduce mandatory digital ID cards in a bid to tackle illegal migration.
As exclusively revealed by The i Paper , the so-called 'BritCard' will be subject to consultation and thought to require legislation.
If approved, every adult in Britain will require the piece of identification to verify their right to live and work in the UK .
According to The Times , Sir Keir Starmer is expected to announce his backing in principle for the scheme on Friday.
Under the new plans, anyone starting a new job would be required to "show" the digital ID which would then be automatically checked against a central database of those entitled to work in the UK.
Workers currently have to show one of a number of different possible physical ID documents, but t
