OLD SAYBROOK, CT (WFSB) - According to a forum on Change.org , people are petitioning to allow class pets back into Old Saybrook Schools.

As of Thursday afternoon, there were almost 300 signatures.

“Class pets can enhance the learning experience in numerous ways. They provide hands-on opportunities for students to learn about biology, responsibility, and animal care. More importantly, they offer companionship and emotional relief, especially for students dealing with stress or emotional challenges,” wrote the organizers of the petition.

They said the school system has restricted teachers from having class pets.

In the forum, parents said a second grade teacher actually received a grant for a bearded dragon as a class pet.
