With the National Hurricane Center currently tracking three systems in the Atlantic —Hurricane Gabrielle, Tropical Storm Humberto and Disturbance 94L — one would think this is a first.
But it’s not.
As reported by The Weather Channel , from Sept. 25 to 27, 1998, there were four active hurricanes simultaneously spinning in the Atlantic: Georges, Ivan, Jeanne and Karl.
Gabrielle, tracking through the Central Atlantic, is not a local concern, but predicting the potential threat posed by Humberto and 94L to the Palmetto State is proving a little trickier.
Humberto is currently packing 50 mph winds, but is expected to reach hurricane strength during the evening of Sept. 26. It’s predicted to continue to develop into a major hurricane early Sept. 29, with sustained wind speeds of 120 mph
