BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Republican-led bill in the News York State Legislature would require approval from a judge before police disciplinary records can be released.
For more than 40 years, police disciplinary records were considered confidential in New York. In 2020, a bill ending that was signed into law. Now, new legislation, Senate Bill S111, sponsored by State Senator Patrick Gallivan (R) Elma, would roll that back.
"The law that changed in New York took away the civil rights that police officers had in the protection of their personnel records," Gallivan said in defense of the legislation.
The bill has renewed the debate over police accountability, with critics of the legislation arguing it would affect transparency; however, Gallivan maintains there would be other entities that
