(WKBN) - A working group in Ohio has requested that the state seek to ban carbonated beverages high in sugar, or similar caloric sweeteners, from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

States must submit a waiver to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to ban certain foods. This gives states the opportunity to fine-tune the federal-run program to the needs of each individual state.

Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) Director Matt Damschroder announced that the workgroup created by Governor Mike DeWine provided its recommendations for the federal waiver request.

Other states have submitted waivers that have been approved to ban some food items. Most of the waivers include soft drinks, but some include candy and prepared desserts.
