WASHINGTON, D.C. - Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has directed the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct a review into the safety evidence of mifepristone, the pill used for nearly two-thirds of abortions nationwide.

According to the FDA, only five deaths per one million users were associated with the drug since it's approval in 2000. Clinical studies have consistently established the mifepristone's safety over the decades.

Montana Senator Steve Daines released a statement in support of the review.

"This has been a much-needed step I've been advocating for that will help countless women and unborn children across our nation," Daines said.

It remains unclear if the FDA plans to impose any new actions on restrictions on mifepristone.
