During a recent training camp practice at WinSport, the Calgary Flames explored potential line combinations for three-on-three overtime scenarios. This practice session provided a glimpse into how the team might approach overtime situations in the upcoming season.
Among the combinations tested was Nazem Kadri, who led the Flames with two overtime goals last season, paired with Connor Zary and defense prospect Zayne Parekh. Another trio featured Morgan Frost, who scored the game-winning goal in a split-squad game against Edmonton, alongside Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar. Additionally, Matt Coronato was seen working with team captain Mikael Backlund and Rasmus Andersson.
The Flames struggled in overtime during the 2024-25 season, finishing with a record of 5-12. Their success rate of .294 placed them at the bottom of the NHL for three-on-three overtime performance. Weegar acknowledged the need for improvement, stating, "That’s an area we need to start winning more and getting more points from." The team hopes that these new combinations will enhance their chances in overtime situations this season.
