ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A College Park police officer is facing a slew of charges in connection with an August chase that turned deadly, according to arrest warrants.
Donnie Smith was charged with vehicular homicide, hit and run resulting in serious injury or death, reckless driving, violation of oath by a public officer and failure to report an accident.
Arrest warrants state that on Aug. 17, Smith chased a 2009 Land Rover on I-285 near Riverdale Road in a “reckless manner.”
Two people died after they were ejected from the car.
Warrants also state he left the accident and did not stop to help after witnessing the “Land Rover exit the roadway, strike a tree, and split in half.”
Smith was “traveling far above the posted speed limit,” going over 100 mph, the warrants state.
