The Federal Aviation Administration extended a June 2025 order that will limit arrivals and departures at Newark Liberty International Airport through Oct. 24, 2026.
However, the FAA could increase the number of allowed arrivals and departures to 72 an hour before the end of this October. The number of hourly flights in and out of Newark is currently curtailed to 68.
Before a series of blackouts that started at the end of April, Newark had 77 flights an hour, and is capable of handling 80 flights an hour, according to Sarah McKeon, director of aviation at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
The bistate agency owns and oversees the three major airports in the New York City region, including Newark, John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia, as well as Teterboro Airport .
