SAC CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - A jury trial is set for a man accused of assaulting former Sac County Sheriff Jonathan Meyer.
A jury trial for 33-year-old Matthew Birt of Sac City is set for Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 9 a.m. at the Sac County Courthouse.
Birt faces two charges, including one count of willful injury resulting in serious injury and one count of assault of a peace officer with intent to inflict serious injury.
Court documents show Birt filed a not guilty plea to the two charges and waived his right to a speedy trial through a written arraignment filed Tuesday, Sept. 16.
This comes after Birt was taken into custody and charged on Thursday, Sept. 4, after the reported assault, just days before Meyer resigned from the sheriff position.
Meyer was appointed as the new sheriff in September.
