The public will have an opportunity on Thursday to sound off on whether Newark Schools Superintendent Roger León deserves a two-year extension on his contract.
The superintendent has three years left on his five-year contract, but has asked for an additional two years, which would make him one of the longest serving superintendents in the state.
The new contract would replace the five-year, $1.5 million deal that was automatically renewed on May 15, 2022, the deadline the Newark school board would have had to notify León that it did not intend to renew his initial employment agreement.
The district never announced that renewal, nor did it hold any public meetings about León’s contract extension, much to the public’s anger and dismay.
This time it will be different. A public hearing is
