CLINTON, Iowa (KWQC) - The Clinton Humane Society will no longer accept stray animals from within city limits beginning Oct. 1 when its contract with the city ends.
Both the shelter and the city said the costs of dealing with hoarding cases is the tipping point.
The Humane Society said their three-year contract with the city ends on Sept. 30 but are still in negotiations for a new contract.
“This is an unfortunate situation and a decision that the board did not take lightly,” officials with the Humane Society said. “Hoarding cases have become an astronomical expense for us and the city.”
Shelter officials said in the last three years they’ve taken in 2,571 animals, and more than 300 were from hoarding cases.
