A teacher and a librarian who were banned from working with children after they were charged with animal cruelty charges offences have failed in a bid to have the prohibition lifted.
The duo — who also worked with an array of rescue animals — were each charged with five counts of ill-treating an animal for allegedly failing to provide a dog, 48 rabbits and five guinea pigs with appropriate care.
Under South Australian legislation, the charges are considered "presumptive disqualification offences" which assume that that an alleged offender poses an unacceptable risk to vulnerable people such as children.
Upon being charged, the SA Department of Human Services issued the individuals with prohibition notices and they lost their jobs.
