Lansing — The U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit Thursday against Michigan and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, saying her office had failed to fulfill a demand for information on the state's registered voter list.
On July 21, the department within Republican President Donald Trump's administration sent a letter to Benson, a Democrat and Michigan's top election official, seeking a current electronic copy of the state's computerized voter list, according to the suit. But Benson only turned over a public version of the list without "crucial identifying information," the suit said.
