Netflix’s is tackling the troubled teen industry in a chilling, Twin Peaks-esque new drama, Wayward, but is the show a true story?

Wayward, which premiered on Sept 25, was created by Mae Martin and is partially inspired by real events but with plenty of twists.

Martin stars as Alex, a police officer who recently relocated to the surrounding areas of Tall Pine Academy, a school for troubled teens run by an ecclectic leader (Toni Collette). Alex crosses paths with best friends Abbie and Leila, teens from the school who are plotting their escape. Alex vows to help them out and expose what is happening behind the school’s walls.
