PORTLAND, Maine — The numbers vary from year to year, but the pattern is clear: Roughly half of all homicides in Maine are connected to domestic abuse. Most of the victims are female.

October is Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, and the Maine nonprofit Finding Our Voices is presenting a number of events—panel discussions, a public rally, a healing retreat, a special night at a Maine Mariners game, and more—to bring attention to the cause.

The mission of Finding Our Voices, founder and CEO Patrisha McLean said, “is bold education and awareness, so everyone can understand the emergency of domestic abuse in Maine. And then we also provide meaningful support for our sisters to help them get out and stay out of what we escaped from.”
