PHOENIX — A criminal trial is underway for a former Phoenix police officer accused of abusing and causing the death of his 7-year-old daughter in 2017.

Opening statements were delivered this week before a Maricopa County jury in the trial for Germayne Cunningham and his wife, Lisa, who are accused of being involved in the death of Sanaa Cunningham.

In March 2016, a report was made to Arizona Department of Child Safety that Sanaa might be being neglected. After talking to the child, a DCS worker was concerned about possible behavioral problems.

In February 2017, Sanaa was taken to a hospital and later died from cardiac arrest as a result of sepsis, according to prosecutors. The Goodyear Police Department then opened an investigation and inspected the Cunningham couple's phones.
